ERTMS Key Management

Synopsis

This document contains requirements for the management of cryptographic keys on the mainline railway to facilitate secure European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) data radio communication. ERTMS exchanges information between trackside equipment and trains and vice versa in the form of data messages. When radio is used for these data messages a secure connection is required, and corresponding keys must be available on either side of the connection.

Summary Of Changes

New document based on requirements and guidance from withdrawn GERT8403 Iss 1 and GEGN8603 Iss 1, and the latest ERTMS knowledge and requirements.

12 mnth review - No further action. 60 mnth review to be brought forward to 1/3/2021. Committee approved the proposal to revert to the 2023 five-year review date.

Requesting ERTMS Keys

The ERTMS Key Management administrator is responsible for the management of ERTMS Keys, and to act as a distributor for foreign ERTMS keys.

The ERTMS Key Management administrator of the GB mainline railway is the National Records Group (NRG) of Network Rail. The requesting organisation can submit the request for ERTMS Keys via https://networkrail.sharepoint.com/sites/ERTMSRequests.  Please note:  users will be asked to register with the Network Rail SharePoint system on first access.
