Level crossings - signallers' regulations

Synopsis

You will need this module if you carry out the duties of a signaller in an area where there is a level crossing.

Summary Of Changes

Regulation 8.8, ‘Single line working over a CCTV or RC crossing supervised by a crossing keeper’ has been revised to reintroduce a previously deleted statement that the requirement does not apply where Signal Box Special Instructions allow an attendant not to be appointed. Absence of this created a contradiction with regulation 8.5.

Regulation 9, ‘Crossings with red and green warning lights (R/G)’ has been revised concerning level crossings with wrong-direction controls.

The changes form part of the suite of general updates issued annually which are intended to improve understanding and application of the content of the Rule Book and provide opportunities for duty holders to operate more efficiently.

In section 1, ‘Types of level crossing’ gender specific language has been removed; ‘manned crossing with barriers’ has been changed to ‘manually-controlled level crossing with barriers’ and ‘manned crossing with gates’ changed to ‘manually-controlled crossing with gates’. These changes were previously published in the December 2022 Periodical Operating Notice.
