RIS-6701-DST Iss 1

Train Service and Path Identifiers

Synopsis

This document sets out requirements and guidance on how to uniquely identify train services and paths in telematic messages used on the Great Britain (GB) mainline railway. It provides guidance on train service and path identifiers used in GB and how train services and paths could be identified in the future, using the telematics framework.

Summary Of Changes

This standard describes and guides towards a methodology to uniquely identify train services and paths using the framework set out in the telematics National Technical Specification Notices (NTSNs). It has built on existing agreements between Network Rail and train operators and aligns with a framework already in use in systems such as Traffic Management and the Layered Information Network Exchange (LINX). This new RIS negates the need for systems to create their own identifiers, harmonises data across operational systems and simplifies system to system communications and data transfer. Opportunities are presented for how challenges with existing identifiers could be mitigated through the publication of the six-character Train ID in operational contexts, and adoption of additional components of the telematics framework.
