Social Sustainability Working Group
01/06/2022
The purpose of the Social Sustainability Working Group (SSWG) is to facilitate cross industry collaboration on the social sustainability agenda. This includes social impact, social performance and social value.
"The rail industry is one of the country’s biggest employers and is therefore able to support economic growth. If focused correctly, we have an opportunity to support social mobility and make a positive difference. It is important that we as an industry lead the way, exploiting the direction and guidance from the SSWG."
"SSWG works collaboratively on the social sustainability agenda, making it a positive driving force within industry. We want to maximise outcomes in line with the Sustainable Rail Blueprint areas, ensuring rail is people-centred, at the heart of communities, enhances careers, and supports the economy and sustainable growth."
Scope
The SSWG seeks to:

- Lead on the social sustainability elements of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint (SRB).
- Influence policy on social sustainability and rail (procurement, contracting and investment decisions).
- Advance and promote measurement and valuation of social outcomes in rail projects and operations.
- Collate and communicate social sustainability information.
- Identify social sustainability research and development needs and act as steering group for such projects.
- Enable a strategic approach to capacity building (competency, knowledge, and awareness) in social sustainability and social value across the industry.
- Act as subject matter experts on social impact and social value for the industry.
- Facilitate cross-industry networks and activities that encourage collaboration, solve challenges and ensure social value is included in rail projects and operations.
