Helping rail install and gain insights from Internet of Things sensors

Making it easy to use Internet of Things sensors on existing rolling stock to unlock new capabilities and efficiencies

'Internet of Things sensors have huge potential in the rail industry'

Principal Electrical and Systems RST Engineer, RSSB

The challenge

Internet of Things (IoT) sensors can be difficult to install on existing rolling stock. Operators need help to navigate standards, procure sensors, and unlock new features. Despite this and the limited costs, IoT sensor uptake is still low across the industry.

The installation process can be complicated. This creates barriers to adoption. Operators need to address challenges such as data ownership, data storage, and cybersecurity.

What we did

This work produced guidance for rolling stock operators and owners. This covers the procurement, installation, usage, and maintenance of IoT sensors.

The project engaged with industry stakeholders to understand the challenges faced in utilising IoT sensors. Expert inputs, literature reviews, and past IoT sensor case studies were used to address these common challenges. This resulted in a comprehensive guidance report.

Benefits delivered

Reducing barriers to IoT sensor adoption will increase their uptake across the industry. Operators are now better placed to exploit their insights and functions.

Using IoT sensors on older rolling stock enables modern data functionalities for a fraction of the cost of procuring new rolling stock.

Operators can follow a common process for identifying, procuring, using, and maintaining IoT sensors. This reduces individual costs for overcoming challenges within each use case.
