Guidance for operators to get the benefits of mobile devices

Good practice guidance on the specifications, introduction and use of mobile devices to support train driver tasks.
'The research provides guidance on where technology can help and how to choose the right device for the job.'

Head of Operational Safety, Govia Thameslink Railway Limited (GTR)

The challenge

The rail industry is increasingly using mobile electronic devices, such as mobile phones or tablets, to support train drivers. The devices, which reduce the need for paper-based systems, can help drivers access information more easily.

However, the rollout of this technology has not been matched by the development of consistent and robust industry practice. Without clear and shared guidance, there is a risk of unsafe and inconsistent approaches. This creates confusion around how the devices can be used safely in different contexts.

What we did

Project T1332 developed the first comprehensive, industry guidance for the safe and effective use of company-issued mobile devices to train drivers.

It draws on extensive stakeholder engagement, technical analysis, and human factors research. The outputs of the research define the minimum technical specifications and outline safe use cases, which includes a risk-benefit methodology.

A clear, future-focused framework is provided to support the safe, efficient, and scalable adoption of mobile technology across the rail industry.

Benefits delivered

The outputs from our research enable a safer and more consistent use of mobile technology across the rail industry. It also provides a foundation for adoption of future mobile technology within the rail sector.

Wider application of mobile devices in driving operations has several opportunities for industry. These include better communication with railway staff and emergency services, improved access to operational information, and greater efficiency in range of administrative tasks.
