Improved mapping of signals to track sections
The Red Aspect Approaches to Signals Tool (RAATS) Toolkit is able to identify trains that have approached signals at red. This can drive safety improvements. However, this needs accurate signal-to-berth mapping.
Some of our previous research had explored three alternative methods but found them to have limitations. This project was needed to develop a more robust and adaptable signal-to-berth mapping methodology.
This research was part of the strategic partnership with the University of Huddersfield. It successfully developed processes that improve the industry’s capability to update signal-to-berth mapping. A user-friendly app was also developed to make the routine use of these processes easier.
Case studies were carried out to test the efficacy of the app. This test included the mapping of five new train describer areas where no mapping was previously available.
The case studies showed the ability of the developed processes to correctly map the signal ID to the exact location. This also shows the viability of automating signal-to-berth mapping.
The tool will enable the signal-to-berth mapping to be updated and significantly expanded across the country.
The new RAATS toolkit will be going live in 2025-26. It will provide improved functionality and usability. The processes developed in this project will enable the new version of RAATS to have a significantly larger coverage. This will help to drive both safety and performance across the network.
