Scope

The NWG seeks to:

  • Lead on a coherent and clear narrative on noise in rail.
  • Guide on the noise elements of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint and define an ongoing programme to deliver that ambition.
  • Review the development and influence policy, legislation and standards relating to noise and/or vibration and advise the industry on appropriate responses.
  • Advance and promote noise measurement. 
  • Collate and communicate noise information and act as the subject matter experts on noise for the rail industry.
  • Identify rail’s research and development needs around noise and act as steering group for such projects.
  • Enable a strategic approach to capacity building (competency, knowledge, and awareness) in noise across the industry.
  • Facilitate cross-industry networks and activities that encourage collaboration, solve challenges and ensure noise is included in rail projects and operations. 
  • Respond to consultations and provide expert advice to the railway industry, including the Department for Transport and the Office of Rail and Road as appropriate, on all aspects of national policy, legislation and standards relating to noise (and vibration).
  • Advise and assist in the implementation of mandatory requirements from national, and where relevant, EU legislation relating to noise and/or vibration.
