DC Electrified Lines

Synopsis

You will need this module if you carry out the duties of a train driver, guard, shunter, designated person (DP), signaller, crossing keeper in DC electrified areas.

Summary Of Changes

The rules have been updated throughout to refer to multi-mode trains. Definitions have been updated also to include multi-mode train and self-powered mode.

New instructions have been introduced at section 12.2 concerning a multi-mode train entering or leaving a portion of line where an emergency switch-off is in place, it being necessary for the collector shoes to be retracted. An instruction has been added that this type of movement is not allowed for a train with collector shoes unless they can be retracted.  An equivalent instruction has been added at section 12.4 on a train entering a possession.

A new instruction has been added at 12.3 that a possession must not be taken around a train that has collector shoes unless they can be retracted.

A new section has been added at section 13 to cater for multi-mode trains changing over from dc electric power which describes the driver’s actions when this is to happen. This includes at 13.2 corresponding instructions to those that already exist in module AC regarding wrong direction movements.

A new section 14 has been introduced concerning PCO between dc electrification and other forms of traction power. It explains that train operating company instructions will specify where and how PCO is to be carried out. It also describes the signs that can be provided.

New instructions at 14.7 cover when there are defective balises that would prevent automatic power changeover being carried out. Similar instructions concerning PCO signs that are missing, damaged or obscured have been added at 14.8.

The changes form part of a suite of standards changes relating to the introduction of new permanent and temporary power changeover signs applicable to multimode trains. It is anticipated that this suite of changes can make some contribution to reducing the number of failed changeovers.
