GMGN2542 Iss 1

Determination of Aerodynamic Rolling Moment Coefficient

Synopsis

This Guidance Note provides guidance to railway undertakings and infrastructure managers for methods of undertaking wind tunnel tests to determine more accurate vehicle aerodynamic rolling moment coefficients. These can be used as an alternative to using the benchmark equations for rolling moment coefficients provided in GMRT2142 Resistance of Railway Vehicles to Roll-over in Gales.

Summary Of Changes

The standard is intended for use by individuals and organisations involved in the specification and design of new conventional and tilting railway vehicles, as well as those involved in compatibility assessments.

This standard updates and reformats GMRC2542 issue one and includes a minor amendment. The guidance provided is aligned with recent RSSB research and British Standard BS EN14067-6:2018+A1:2022 "Railway Applications – Aerodynamics – Part 6: Requirements and test procedures for cross wind assessment", where appropriate. In particular, an option is included to use numerical methods as an alternative to wind tunnel testing in some circumstances.

GMGN2542 issue one does not introduce anything significantly different to that provided by GMRC2542 issue one, so it is not expected that users of the standard will do anything differently as a result of the publication of GMGN2542 issue one. Providing the option to use numerical methods will reduce costs in particular cases.
