Provision of Signage at Power Changeover Locations

Synopsis

This document sets out requirements and guidance for provision of signage at power changeover locations for multi-mode rolling stock.

Summary Of Changes

At the time of publication of issue one of this standard, not all signs above had agreed designs and were not therefore published in the RSSB Standards Catalogue. Issue two now includes all these signs and their application rules.

Clause G2.3.7 has been amended for completeness to refer to the use of automatic power control (APC) magnets as an engineering control, an option that has only been identified since the publication of issue one.

A new section 2.5 on supplementary routing information has been included based on content that had been in Appendix A of the previous issue. The includes a new requirement at clause 2.5.6 for provision of supplementary signs to be included in the drivability assessment at each power changeover (PCO) location. In addition, guidance on the use of supplementary signs is provided.

Section 2.8 (Temporary PCO Locations) includes new guidance that the distinctive appearance for this signage also gives benefit by reminding drivers of the difference in location where pantographs must be lowered or raised.

Other changes have been made throughout to bring the document into line with RSSB editorial guidelines.

The changes form part of a suite of standards changes relating to the introduction of new permanent and temporary power changeover signs applicable to multimode trains. It is anticipated that this suite of changes will make some contribution to reducing the number of failed changeovers.
