This technical note provides signposts to existing standards and good practice in engineering change management relating to software and firmware.

This technical note was originally numbered TN104.

This technical note has been produced at the request of industry for guidance about engineering change management on rail vehicles as it relates to firmware and software changes.

This technical note complements RIS-2700-RST Verification of Conformity of Engineering Change to Rail Vehicles and RIS-8270-RST Route Level Assessment of Technical Compatibility between Vehicles and Infrastructure. Although these standards apply to engineering change, they do not explicitly address software and firmware.

It is applicable to:

• railway undertakings;
• rolling* stock owners and leasing companies;
• vehicle* manufacturers;
• vehicle* component and system suppliers and integrators; and
• entities in charge of maintenance.
