Gauging

Railway gauging is the process of ensuring there is sufficient space (clearance) between a train and surrounding infrastructure to prevent collisions and ensure safe operation. It involves assessing the dimensions of both the train and the railway infrastructure to verify compatibility.

The Vehicle / Structure Systems Interface Committee has prepared a series of articles to explain gauging. The articles cover the processes available, the limitations of these processes, and the reasons for such limitations.
