Rail Environment Forum

The Rail Environment Forum (REF) is the expert group leading on environmental issues relating to passengers, railway stations and freight operators in Great Britain. The forum aims to enable the rail industry to effectively manage environmental risk and reduce all negative environmental impacts, while enhancing positive environmental impacts.
"Working with RSSB provides access to a wide support network of environment specialists from across the industry. It creates a forum where collaboration and best practice is utilised to minimise environmental impacts and set the direction for the rail industry to become the green transport choice for a decarbonising and socially responsible society.
The Rail Environment Forum acts as an extension to each business’ environmental teams to enable valuable discussion and collaboration across the entire rail industry. In recent years the forum has acted as an advisory panel for changes in the industry, such as the development of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint to support effective decision making."

Scope
The REF seeks to:
- Act as a forum of environmental experts with a single voice inside and outside the rail industry.
- Promote the rail industry as a leader in the environment field.
- Increase the knowledge and awareness of environmental experts within the rail industry.
- Promote the sharing of lessons learnt and best practice across rail and other industries.
- Review new or pending environmental legislation, with regards to the impact it will have on the rail industry.
- Review the effectiveness of current rail industry environmental policies and practices.
- Develop and embed industry good practice in all areas of environmental management.
- Review environmental performance trends to recommend future rail industry environment strategies or priorities.
- Define objectives and outputs that the Forum intends to deliver at the first meeting of every calendar year.
