Scope

The ZWWG seeks to:

  • develop and communicate a clear, strong narrative around zero waste and circular economy practices across the rail industry
  • support the industry in following England’s new Simpler Recycling regulations, ensuring organisations are prepared, informed, and aligned
  • promote the implementation of circular design principles for all rail assets, infrastructure, and rolling stock
  • advance best practices for circular operations, including maintenance, reuse of components, and material efficiency
  • encourage zero-waste journeys by engaging with passengers and local communities to reduce consumer waste and promote reuse
  • facilitate knowledge sharing and training to build industry capacity in circular economy.

The ZZWG includes representatives from key stakeholders across the rail industry, including:

  • passenger train operators
  • freight train operators
  • rolling stock owners and manufacturers
  • station retailers
  • supply chain
  • Department for Transport
  • Office of Rail and Road
  • Transport Scotland
  • Transport for Wales
  • local community and sustainability organisations
  • Network Rail and other infrastructure managers.
