Health and Wellbeing

Health and wellbeing managed on a par with safety

Health and Wellbeing is one of five key risk areas that industry will address through the Rail Health and Safety Strategy (the Strategy).

Introduction

Sickness absence in the rail industry is nearly twice the national rate and results in over a million lost workdays every year. But there is no safety without health, so our employees need the right support and help to take care of their physical and mental wellbeing.

By working together we can achieve industry-wide benefits that see a reduction in sickness absence, prevention of harm, and improvements in environmental conditions. We can work towards a positive and attractive work environment by using data-driven insights, tackling industry challenges and adopting a shared responsibility.

The Strategy envisions ‘health and wellbeing managed on a par with safety’. The strategic initiatives to address this critical risk area are listed below.

  • Strategic initiatives:
    • Develop and publish long term strategy for H&W data.
    • Develop and publish public health strategy.
    • Fitness for work standards published.
    • Understand and communicate the influence health has on safety incidents.
    • Develop Health by Design Framework.
    • Taking Healthier Decisions.
    • Industry wide H&W info system with insights.
    • Health risk management on a par with safety.
