RIS-3771-TOM Iss 1

Operation of Route- and Line-Proving Trains

Synopsis

This standard sets out a framework to identify the need for, plan, and operate trains for the purposes of route proving on routes that have previously been closed due to extreme weather events. This standard also sets out a framework to operate trains on lines that have been closed for a prolonged period of time due to engineering works.

Summary Of Changes

RIS-3771-TOM is a newly written industry standard outlining the requirements and guidance for operating both route-proving and line-proving trains. It is aimed at railway undertakings and infrastructure managers and supported by updates to the Rule Book.

The standard promotes collaboration to discuss the operation of route-proving trains on routes closed due to extreme weather events, providing guidance on effective staff briefings, good practice for train operation decisions, and the types of trains best suited for these tasks. RIS-3771-TOM also sets out similar requirements and guidance for line-proving trains to ensure equipment functionality after extended closures. This standard will assist transport operators in establishing procedures for route controllers managing the operation of these trains.
