Our research into low adhesion between wheel and rail covers innovations in sanding, forecasting, railhead cleaning, and more. Work on double variable rate sanders has demonstrated a step change in braking performance during low adhesion, potentially ending the need for autumn timetables.
Research aims to help industry prevent and mitigate disruption, improving the customer experience. Projects have a strong focus on analysing data to understand and manage the causes of delays, and on building staff capacity and confidence.
As an industry, we need to prioritise the adoption of the technologies that offer the greatest promise, and be ready to respond to emerging trends. At RSSB we use horizon scanning to inform the research programme and help rail decision and policy makers prepare for the future.
We also carry out research to support industry sustainability, covering decarbonisation, air quality and social value.
