Earthworks Data Insights

Soil cutting failures account for the majority of train accident risk from earthworks during extreme rainfall. Added to which, the Meteorological Office (Met Office) reports that extreme rainfall events have increased in the last decade. In this report, RSSB’s Data Insights team interrogate data from the Met Office and Network Rail, to develop a statistical model that predicts the probability of soil cutting failures given different rainfall and earthwork parameters.
