TN2309 Iss 1

Examination and repair of structural corrosion in Mark 1 type rolling stock

Synopsis

This technical note will help those maintaining or repairing Mark 1 type rolling stock to detect and remedy corrosion on this type of vehicle. This includes British Railways Mark 1 and Mark 2 carriages which continue to form the majority of heritage passenger vehicles on the GB mainline railway.

Summary Of Changes

This technical note has been produced to address the Office of Rail and Road’s request for guidance to help establish acceptable structural examination and repair practices for Mark 1 type rolling stock. Mark 1 type vehicles come under the category of other rail vehicle fleets.

This technical note also addresses a recommendation from the Rail Accident and Investigation Branch’s report into the derailment of a passenger train at Carmont, Scotland (August 2020).

The guidance in the technical note should be integrated into the vehicle maintenance and overhaul procedures of duty holders to achieve compliance with the Office of Rail and Road’s requirements to consider granting exemptions from Railway Safety Regulations 1999.

It supplements RIS-2003-RST Certification and Registration of Heritage Rail Vehicles Operating on the GB Mainline Railway and RIS-4472-RST Engineering Requirements for Steam Locomotives and other Heritage Rail Vehicles.

It is applicable to: restorers; and overhaulers and maintainers of Mark 1 type rolling stock*.

*includes Mark 1 and Mark 2 type rolling stock carriages used in heritage trains on the GB mainline railway.
