Technical Note: Rolling stock – cyber security essentials, TN2312 issue 1
Watch the December 2023 standards quarterly webinar
Technical notes are documents produced by RSSB to help with the application of standards, guidance or legislation about a particular topic. These are non-binding documents which do not change existing requirements or guidance so do not change the application of current standards or legislation.
For TN2312 the associated documents are:
- RIS-2004-RST, issue one, Rail Vehicle Maintenance
- RIS-0745-CCC, issue one, Client Safety Assurance of High Integrity Software-Based Systems for Railway Applications
- GMGN2571 issue two, Storage and Recommissioning of Rail Vehicles
-
Why has TN2312 been produced? This technical note has been produced because cyber-attacks on the railway are likely to increase as the railway becomes more digital in design and operation. Cyber security must be considered in the context of the overall safety and security of the railway.
-
What is the purpose of TN2312?This technical note sets out types of cyber security control measures that may be put in place when designing a new component or function to help mitigate against malicious or non-malicious cyber-attacks on operational and information technology software systems on rolling stock.
-
Why is TN2312 important? This technical note is important because it highlights the vulnerabilities affecting rolling stock operational and information technology software systems, and emphasises the importance of implementing basic control measures to reduce the risk of cyber-attacks on rolling stock.
-
Who needs to know about TN2312?Rolling stock manufacturers and component suppliers, rolling stock owning companies, railway undertakings, infrastructure managers and entities in charge of maintenance (ECMs) should consider this technical note when designing a new component or function for rolling stock.
